Why should you provide nesting boxes?
The most common guests in birdhouses are birds who previously nested in rotten tree trunks. There are several areas, such as gardens both on the countryside and in urban areas, which have plenty of means of sustenance but no decent nesting places. This is primarily because old trees which have begun rotting are considered a hazard and are therefore culled.
Providing artificial hollows in trees in the shape of nesting boxes could make a great difference to many species that have become endangered because of modern society's advances.
Nesting boxes come in all shapes and sizes but the interior has to be dry and dark. It is also essential that they are safe, i.e. that they won't fall down and that the bird's chicks are safe from squirrels, cats and other threats. |
