Put the nesting box in a central spot in your garden
A good rule of thumb for nests is to pick a central and visible spot in the garden, yet one which is protected from both wind and sun from the south. However, there ought to be some thick bushes or trees nearby as an in-between stop for birds where they can seek refuge in case of danger.
The ideal situation is for there not to be too much commotion around the nest, as birds need some peace and quiet for their chicks.
Two or more nests can be placed in the same garden, as long as they are not too close to each other. This is especially important for the tits, who maintain greater territories of 1000 – 1500 square metres.
Mounting the box
If the box is mounted on a wall or in a tree, don’t forget to put it high enough to be inaccessible for cats or birds of prey. Also make sure that no hanging branches are in the vicinity of the nest.
Mounting on a pole is suitable if you desire to follow the life around the box; make sure to place it on a steady pole at least 1.5 – 1.8 metres in height.
If it is mounted on a pole, remember that it must be smooth so that a cat isn’t able to climb it. The nesting box must also be situated where it won’t be in the sun all day and make it too hot for the birds.
