Appearance
Has a long, smooth sparrow-like appearance with a striped and spotted greyish brown plumage and some yellow on his head and abdomen as well as a reddish brown belly. He will twitch with his tail, which hangs and appears to be rather long, when he sits on a branch.
Similar bird
The greenfinch male is not yellow on its head.
Sounds and song
he yellowhammer’s call is short and out of tune or slightly sucking. The song is typical, as it counts to seven.
Food and bird tables
Common guest at the bird table.
Lives off insects and seeds and is one of few birds who eat oats.
The nest and hollows
The yellowhammer often places its nest, which is made out of grass and other materials, in low shrubs or directly on the ground.
