Did you know?
The wood pigeon, which used to live in woods and out on the countryside, has now been established in gardens and in urban areas. It has adjusted to new habits and environs. Most wood pigeons move south in the wintertime, and do so in large flocks of thousands of birds.
Appearance
As the mating season approaches, the male wood pigeon performs an airborne show, where he will fly forward, rear himself and then glide down again on stiff wings. There is a smacking sound every time he reaches the top of his flight path.
Similar bird
Larger than the tame dove and with a white spot on the side of its neck. Also have white stripes crosswise on its wings.
Sounds and song
The wood pigeon makes a powerful hooting, often abruptly stopped after two repetitions.
Food and bird tables
Rarely seen at the table
Keeps a primarily vegetarian diet consisting of sprouts, berries and seeds – but also small animals such as worms and snails.
The nest and hollows
The male gathers dry twigs and branches which the female assembles into a rather sloppy nest. It is often so thin that the eggs are visible from underneath, through the twigs.
