Did you know?
The willow tit lives close to areas of old coniferous forests.
Appearance
Close relative to the marsh tit but with a matt black crown, larger black throat patch and greyish back.
Similar bird
The marsh tit’s twin, but with cleaner grey-white colours and a lighter lengthwise band along the folded-up wing. The sounds also differ.
Sounds and song
The call is rather extended, and the song is heard mainly in the wintertime and consists of a melancholy lament in a couple different versions.
Food and bird tables
Common guest at the bird table.
Seen less often at bird tables than the closely related marsh tit.
The nest and hollows
Will nest in nesting boxes, amongst other things. Is prone to peck its nest out of a rotted fir or birch stump, or takes over a hollow from a lesser woodpecker. The hollow is often 1/2-3 metres above ground.
