Did you know?
The siskin will eat mostly alder cones. These birds prefer to appear in flocks and their presence is determined by the supply of alder seeds.

Appearance
A very small finch with a petite, pointed beak and a short cleft tail.

Similar bird
Smaller than the greenfinch and with yellow angled lines on the wing.

Sounds and song
The call is a clear sound together with a drier one. The song is a fast twittering finished with a croaking.

Food and bird tables
Will frequent the bird table from time to time.
It is not unlikely to see them one at the time at the table. Seeds from coniferous and deciduous trees, mostly birch and alder. Also sprouts, juniper berries and insects are parts of their diet.

The nest and hollows
The nest is unusually high in a fir or pine tree and is therefore rather hard to encounter. It can be as high as 25 metres off the ground, and is placed far out on a branch. The four to six eggs are a bluish white with dark spots. There are usually two broods per season, the first in April or May. The female does all the brooding herself for 11 days and is fed by her mate during this time.
