Did you know?
They cling to the tips of birch branches and often hang upside down. Some years the country is invaded by redpolls, yet other years there are almost none at all.
Appearance
A slightly greyish brown bird with a red spot on the forehead, a small black spot on the chin and a deeply cleft tail.
Similar bird
The back has grey stripes, not a soft brown colour as the linnet.
Sounds and song
The call is fast and can be heard both in flight and from the trees, while the song is slightly humming.
Food and bird tables
Common guest at the bird table.
Birch seeds are the primary diet, but in the summer, insects are also of interest and during the rest of year other finer seeds.
The nest and hollows
It is the female who builds the nest, rather close to the ground.
