Did you know?
The westernmost area in which the species occurs naturally seems to be Transcaucasus, and Greeks and Romans obtained the first tame pheasants from there. The males live polygamy and are very hostile during the mating season.
Appearance
The adult male is unmistakable with his long, thin crosswise striped tail, and the green, lustrous head. The female is beige brown with dark spots and therefore rather modest but the long tail still tells of her being a pheasant.
Similar bird
Half grown chicks may sometimes be mistaken for partridges but have a more even yellowish brown colour and have no rusty red on their tails.
Sounds and song
The rooster has a blaring sound followed by a violent flutter of wings.
Food and bird tables
Will visit the bird table from time to time.
The diet consists of insects, worms, berries and seeds.
The nest and hollows
The pheasant will nest under a slouching fir branch, in a heap of brushwood or in tall grass, and the nest is a simple pit. The first nest is usually not very carefully chosen, so when the female has laid her eggs the nest is often plundered by crows or foxes. The female then learns to pick a more protected spot, and then lays another brood of eggs.
