The green woodpecker

The male

When it is about to rain the green woodpecker has a tendency to call out a lot.

In the summer the green woodpecker eats large beetle larvae from underneath the bark or inside tree trunks, but in the winter it will live off ants it has dug out of ant hills under the snow.

Appearance
A woodpecker with a green back, red crown and a spot on the cheek. The female doesn’t have the spot.

Similar bird
The golden oriole female is also greenish, but the green woodpecker has a red crown.

Sounds and song
A guttural laugh that falls tonally towards the end. This, as well as the faster flight sound can be heard during all seasons.

Food and bird tables
Rare guest at the bird table.
Insect eater who usually feeds on ants. In the wintertime when the ant hills are covered with snow the green woodpecker will dig under the snow to get the ants. It also lives off insects that dig into wood. It will mark out its territory depending on where it finds food.

The nest and hollows
The green woodpecker likes to use old nests that have been carved out of rotted aspens.
